OVERVIEW : Biomedical engineering is a field which is the synthesis of medicine, life sciences and engineering fields. Biomedical engineers strive to make the life of patients longer or easier with their work by developing instruments like artificial organs, prostheses (artificial devices that replace missing body parts), instrumentation, medical information systems, and health management and care delivery systems. Biomedical engineers also design devices which are used in medical diagnosis such as like imaging systems such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), x-ray machines, computerized tomography (a sort of computer enhanced three-dimensional x-ray),and small implantable devices such as pacemakers and drug infusion pumps. They may use their knowledge in chemistry, computer simulation, physics and mathematical models to develop a new drug therapy. Thus the field of biomedical engineering is entwined with the medical and engineering disciplines.

JOB DESCRIPTION : Biomedical engineers work in hospitals, industry, government and private research laboratories and various academic institutions to develop various technologies that are helping in diagnosis and prevention of diseases. The field of biomedical engineering, as mentioned above is thus an amalgamation of the various fields like life sciences, chemistry, physics, computer programming and simulation, electrical engineering, genetics and various other subjects. Some biomedical engineers may involve themselves in building artificial organs, limbs, knees, hips, heart valves and dental implants to replace the damaged body parts. They may also get involved in growing live tissues to make an organ implant which is still in the process of development.

Biomedical engineers are also involved in the developing field of telemedicine which involves patients and doctors to communicate over long distances. There are several other fields within biomedical engineering in which biomedical engineers may work. Bioinformatics involves using computer tools to collect and analyze data related to medicine and biology. BioMEMS Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are the integration of mechanical elements, sensors, actuators, and electronics on a silicon chip. Biomechanics is mechanics applied to biology. Biosignal Processing involves extracting useful information from biological signals for diagnostics and therapeutics purposes. Genomics is a new discipline that involves the mapping, sequencing, and analyzing of genomes-the set of the entire DNA in an organism. Thus, biomedical engineering is an exciting and cutting edge technology field which involves integration of various subjects, all for the welfare of humanity and advancement of medical sciences.

: Biomedical engineers are expected to have good job prospects due to the growing and aging population and continued demand of medical facilities. For those who are aiming to work in industry a college undergraduate degree may suffice while those who are aiming for research positions, a graduate degree is essential.

EXPECTED JOB GROWTH : According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Biomedical engineers are expected to have employment growth of 62 percent from 2010 to 2020,much faster than the average for all occupations. OVERVIEW : Architectural engineers are responsible of designing various service elements which are very important to any building structure. Architectural engineers apply the principles of engineering to a particular building or structure and make the planning, functionality and design of a building implemented on the construction site. 

Architectural engineering often involves interaction and deriving elements from other branches of engineering such as civil and mechanical engineering. One other important task that architectural engineers perform is the viability of the structural integrity of a building. Here also, this function overlaps with a specific branch of engineering itself, namely structural engineering. JOB OUTLOOK : There are very few architectural engineering programs offered in United States and hence the students have fairly good prospects in the job market after completing their studies. Architectural/constructional engineering course is of four to five years duration after which students may find good job prospects in a particular specialized field.
